Building the Hamptone HVTP2 Tube Mic Preamp

I built the Hamptone HVTP2 tube microphone preamplifier from a kit designed and sold by Scott Hampton in Portland, OR. Everything comes as a very well organized and laid-out kit, with excellent, informative instructions, and support from Scott if needed. It’s not a beginner kit, but it’s a real learning experience for somebody wanting to understand how things work a little deeper. I chose to assemble the stepped attenuator option, which helps with recalling settings more precisely.

I’ve used it as a mic pre and direct inject box on countless sessions and live recordings since. Most of the audio examples on this website involved it in some way. It’s built like a tank and it sounds great.
