Recording Pictures at an Exhibition

Scanned-Image.jpeg

I recorded and mixed a performance by the Champaign-Urbana Symphony of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which is presented on a concert DVD. The performance was accompanied by a montage of photography by local photographers Larry Kanfer and Karyl Wackerlin projected on a large screen behind the orchestra.

To avoid obscuring sight lines and to prevent shadows from flown mics or cables, I used AKG 414s on tall stands, rather than the usual flown Schoeps CMC6s. The results were well balanced and took a bit of edge off the normally strident brass.
